CONSONANTS

  • Consonants
    • Class of sounds or the manner by which the sounds are made
      • based on stops
        • nasal stops , airflow passes through nose , produced with a lowered velum, allowing air to escape freely through the nose.
        • oral stops , occlusion made by the any part of tongue or glottis , all air flow ceases
      • based on articulating parts
        • articulated with the back part of the tongue (the dorsum) against the soft palate
          • guttural or velar ( kaṇṭhya )
        • articulated with the body of the tongue raised against the hard palate (the middle part of the roof of the mouth).

        • A dental consonant is a consonant articulated with the tongue against the upper teeth
