Consonants
- Class of sounds or the manner by which the sounds are made
  - based on stops
    - nasal stops , airflow passes through nose , produced with a lowered velum, allowing air to escape freely through the nose.
    - oral stops , occlusion made by the any part of tongue or glottis , all air flow ceases
  - based on articulating parts
    - articulated with the back part of the tongue (the dorsum) against the soft palate
      - guttural or velar ( kaṇṭhya )
    - articulated with the body of the tongue raised against the hard palate (the middle part of the roof of the mouth).
      - palatal
    - consonants in which one or both lips are the active articulator. The two common labial articulations are bilabials,
      - labial
    - consonant is a coronal consonant where the tongue has a flat, concave, or even curled shape, and is articulated between the alveolar ridge and the hard palate. They are sometimes referred to as cerebral consonants
      - retroflex
    - A dental consonant is a consonant articulated with the tongue against the upper teeth
      - dental
